Coup Sauvage & the Snips Requiem Remixes

Building on the song “Heir,” Coup Sauvage & the Snips created a series of actions to change the conversation about development, displacement, and cultural erasure in DC. We opened the fictitious bakery Genrifi-CAKE-tions to critique the erasure and consumption of DC’s past as a result of gentrification. Our motto: why just remember DC’s past, when you can swallow it whole?

In 2016, we organized the District of Columbusing: Anti-Gentrification Storytelling Night. The event brought together local musicians, creatives, and activists to share stories about DC’s past, present, and future — sharing what they love, what they miss, and what vision they have for equitable, just, and creative development in the city. Storytellers also discussed the role artists can play to preserve and celebrate the city’s cultural heritage.
