DJ Geekout @ Allied Media Conference
DJ Geekouts were a collaboration between DJs that began as living room jams featuring pecha kuchas, vinyl sharing, and storytelling. Together, we explored how we live the art of DJing – as the power and responsibility to spark and sustain spaces, make community connections, and create change there is little language for.
We brought the DJ Geekout to the Allied Media Conference in 2011 as an interactive session with live DJ sets, video projections, a DJ how-to, and social media integration. Bridging performance, presentation, and praxis, DJs shared the cultural and social histories behind the music we played. I presented a participatory DJ set on the history of Black women in early 80’s R&B and how this era reflects shifting Black identity post-Civil Rights movement.
