Smithsonian Folklife Festival DC: The Social Power of Music

I was invited to speak at DC: The Social Power of Music, a program presented by the 2019 Smithsonian Folklife Festival at the Lost Origins Gallery. The panel featured members of women’s DJ collectives from Washington, DC, including the First Ladies DJ Collective and Anthology of Booty.

We discussed DJing as cultural activism, fostering connection on the dancefloor, and dealing with microaggressions, sexism, and racism. The panel was moderated by journalist and musician Allison Wolfe who featured the discussion in a two-part episode of her podcast I’m in the Band.
